Decluttering before moving

The best time to declutter  is  definitely before a move . It’s a real opportunity to improve our future quality of life.

Old, worn-out underwear, an excessive amount, clothes of different sizes or even from different eras, expired medicines, useless documents, forgotten and useless objects—in short, a lot of junk.

Decluttering Practical Tips

Space Cleaning , freeing up and reorganizing space, will help us live better.

To begin, we need  to make a list , analyzing room by room. Prepare the boxes you’ll need to store items you want to dispose of , or give to friends, or donate to someone in need, or that you want to donate to a flea market.

Obviously, this is the most important moment. It’s the moment you decide what that item is. Think carefully before making a decision about it. And if you’re not ready to get rid of it right away, keep it in a box and give yourself a deadline that’s no later than the day before your move.

Some tips to help you declutter

  • Take 5 minutes a day
  • Throw away one item a day
  • Make a list of the areas/rooms to clean , starting with the easiest: proceed one area at a time, crossing it off the list
  • Use the ” four-box technique “: when you need to tidy up a room, get four boxes and write ” THROW AWAY, DONATE, KEEP, REUSE” on them . You’ll then have to choose which box to put each item in. The process can be time-consuming, but it works!

Let’s analyze the rooms of the house to be vacated

The kitchen

Surely, in your pantry you’ll find expired or unused canned goods, opened products that are no longer edible, and spices that have dried out. Throw them all away without regret .

Let’s move to the various cabinets and carefully evaluate our cookware, pans, and pots. Let’s throw away any that are damaged or worn out from use and then ask ourselves, ” Do I really need all this cookware? How long has it been since I used this baking pan? “

The bedroom

Well, yes. We have to tackle the “hot spot”: the closet . Deciding what to keep and what to throw away is difficult, but we can do it with these tips.

  • The four-box rule also applies to clothing : keep, archive, donate, and throw away. Throw away clothes only if you have no other options; otherwise, do what you can to reuse them somehow, such as organizing a swap meet with friends or donating them to someone in need, as long as they’re in good condition.
  • Throw away damaged or unnecessary hangers, then sort the remaining ones by placing similar ones next to each other: this will enhance the visual impact.

The bathroom

What do we usually find in the bathroom? Definitely the medicine cabinet. Let’s get rid of all the expired ones, and do the same with detergents, creams, and cosmetics.

The children’s or teenager’s room

  • Sort out dated items, dividing them by year or period (old house, university, etc.).
  • Store children’s items in a designated container.
  • Develop a functional archiving method: your children’s crafts and photos, for example, can be stored in folders or albums, or you can digitize them and store them in digital folders.

Finally, get rid of anything that is broken.
